RHP 50-MM BLOW OFF VALVES
The Blow Off Valve (BOV) is a critical part of any forced induction motor equipped with a turbocharger or centrifugal supercharger. The blow off valve operates by eliminating the pressure spike that occurs when closing the throttle suddenly at high rpm and/or boost. Without the BOV, boost pressure and flow in the discharge tract from the turbo or blower would hit the closed throttle body and create even more pressure. Hitting the closed throttle blade causes the pressure spike to reverse flow back through the turbo. The reverse flow and pressure creates havoc with the turbo or blower by attempting to stop or even reverse the compressor wheel (not desirable at 50,000-100,000+ rpm). The surge can be damaging to the blower or turbo. The BOV provides a quick and effective escape route for the damaging pressure spike. BOVs help increase the life expectancy of a turbo or blower and help retain impeller speed during shifts. A BOV should be considered mandatory with any turbo or centrifugal supercharger. BTW-A BOV can also be plumed as a bypass valve.
